French Broad

Well, I did my first couple of races down here in the South East. I didn’t really know what to expect coming in since I haven’t really been putting in that many miles and my hours on the bike has dropped significantly. It was actually an omnium but I wasn’t able the make the Friday evening TT so I had to settle for the RR/Crit spread across Saturday and Sunday.

Saturday started with about 50+ guys in the field and it was funny to see that the only pro was a marked man in our field, just like back “home”. I guess these things don’t change no matter where you are. I was about 3 laps in to the 8 lap race when my front tire decided to go flat. Even though there were like 20 wheelsets in the follow van, it was wheels-in/wheels-out and no neutral support. My race was over before it even began. Turns out there was a tiny piece of cable that had poke through my tire. My tire stayed inflated over night and for about 2H on Saturday. The constant rubbing of the filament finally caused the slow leak.

Sunday was a little better, I missed a couple of good opportunities in the 70 minute pizza-wedge shaped crit but I ended up winning the field sprint for 8th.

Hit a new max and am now part of the 1500 Club…not bad for a 150lbs climber :-)

Just under the wire

Looks like I made this post in just under the 1 month wire. Once you move over that 1 month barrier, you never get back into the groove. So, the past few weeks has been interesting. On the life/work side of things, I started my new job and am digging it. I work with really great people and felt I was able to get started right off the bat. The only odd thing is that this small company was bought out on my 2nd day. So, that’s made things in the office a little confusing about the future. On the bike end of things, I ended up taking pretty much the entire month of June off save for a couple of stages at the Tour of Ohio, which I crashed out from. I banged up my hip pretty bad, which required a good portion of my newly purchased Tegaderm. My form is starting to come around again which is nice. I started off my first group ride down here by hitting 211 heart rate and not even able to take pulls in the group. At least now I’m able to contribute to the groups speed and put a little pain on the rest of the group. Hopefully will do my first race next weekend…but we’ll see.
